How MKV to MOV Conversion Works
How does FFmpeg convert MKV to MOV?
FFmpeg is the industry-standard open-source engine behind most video software. To make a MOV it demuxes the MKV, decodes the video and audio (or copies them when they are already MOV-compatible), applies any filters you chose, optionally re-encodes with a codec such as H.264, H.265 or Apple ProRes, and writes everything into a QuickTime MOV container — adding a fast-start index when you want streaming.
What is the difference between remuxing and re-encoding?
Remuxing (stream copy) keeps the original compressed video and audio and simply re-wraps them in a new container — fast and lossless, used by Instant mode when your MKV already holds MOV-legal codecs. Re-encoding decodes and re-compresses the streams, which is necessary when changing codec (for example to ProRes), resolution, frame rate or applying edits, and takes more time and CPU.
How does conversion run in the browser?
Normally FFmpeg runs as a native program. Here it is compiled to WebAssembly, a portable binary format browsers execute at near-native speed. Your browser reads the MKV you select, hands its bytes to the Wasm FFmpeg module, runs the exact same conversion logic in a background worker thread, and returns the finished MOV as a downloadable blob — all without a server.
