Image upscaling is the process of increasing the pixel dimensions of an image — making a small, low-resolution picture larger and sharper. A 600×400 thumbnail blown up to 2400×1600 has four times the width and height and sixteen times the pixels, and the challenge is filling in all those new pixels convincingly.
A naive enlargement (nearest-neighbour or the browser's default stretch) just makes the image bigger and blurrier. AI image upscaling and high-quality super-resolution do better: they reconstruct edges, recover apparent texture, reduce noise and sharpen detail so the enlarged image looks crisp rather than soft and pixelated.

Enlarging an image means inventing pixels that were never captured. The quality of an upscaler is decided by how intelligently it does that. The pipeline here has several stages, and understanding them helps you get the best result.
It begins with resampling. Instead of the blocky nearest-neighbour or soft bilinear interpolation, this tool uses a separable Lanczos (a=3) filter with premultiplied alpha. Lanczos approximates the ideal sinc reconstruction, so straight edges stay straight and gradients stay smooth at any scale factor.
After enlargement, the reconstruction stack runs at the output resolution, where detail matters most. An edge-preserving bilateral filter removes noise and grain without softening edges; a JPEG deblocking pass smooths the 8×8 compression grid; multi-scale unsharp masking and a difference-of-Gaussians detail boost amplify fine texture and micro-contrast; local-contrast and auto-levels restore punch; and on portraits, detected faces receive an extra sharpening and contrast pass for crisp eyes and clean skin.
A master AI-strength control blends the reconstructed result back toward the cleanly-upscaled base, so you can dial the effect from subtle to maximum. Every stage is deterministic and explainable — the tool enhances the detail that is present, rather than hallucinating content that was never there.
Resolution is the number of pixels in an image, written as width × height. More pixels mean more detail and a larger image that stays sharp when displayed or printed at a bigger size. A low-resolution image — a small thumbnail, a compressed social-media download, an old phone photo — looks fine small but turns soft, blocky and pixelated when enlarged.
A high-resolution image has enough pixels to look crisp at large sizes. Upscaling bridges the gap: it raises the pixel count and reconstructs detail so a low-resolution source becomes usable for print, large displays, marketplace listings and professional work.
These labels are shorthand for common resolution targets. HD (720p) is 1280×720; Full HD (1080p) is 1920×1080; 2K (1440p) is 2560×1440; 4K (Ultra HD) is 3840×2160; and 8K is 7680×4320 — over 33 megapixels.
Each step roughly doubles the linear resolution and quadruples the pixel count. For the web, Full HD is usually plenty; for large prints, marketplace hero images, posters and high-DPI displays, 4K and 8K make a visible difference. Faces are the part of a photo our eyes scrutinise most, so enhancing them well is essential for portraits and group shots. When you choose Portrait mode, the tool uses the browser's native face detection to locate faces, then applies a targeted enhancement inside each region: extra unsharp masking for crisp eyes and lashes, local contrast for defined features, and gentler denoise to keep skin smooth and natural.
The region enhancement is feathered toward the centre of each face so there is no visible seam with the surrounding image. We are honest that this is detail enhancement, not generative face replacement — it sharpens and cleans the face that is in the photo rather than inventing a new one.
A few habits get dramatically better results. Upscaling amplifies whatever is in the source, so working with the cleanest possible original pays off.
Marketplaces reward large, sharp product images — Amazon recommends at least 1600px on the longest side and rewards zoomable images over 2000px. Many sellers only have small supplier photos, and upscaling turns them into compliant, professional listings.
Use Product mode and an ecommerce preset to upscale to 2000×2000 with clean edges, true colour and reduced compression artifacts, so products look crisp in the gallery and under zoom. Batch the whole catalogue to keep every listing consistent.
Photographers enlarge images for prints, galleries and client deliverables. The print size you can achieve depends on pixels: at 300 DPI, a 1200×1800 image prints a sharp 4×6 inch photo, while a 16×24 inch print needs roughly 4800×7200 pixels.
Upscaling lets you print bigger than the native resolution would allow. Enlarge to the pixel count your print size needs (size in inches × 300), use Portrait or Artwork mode to keep detail natural, and add a touch of sharpening to counteract the softening that enlargement introduces.
Scanned family photos and historical images often suffer from low resolution, scratches, dust, fading and colour casts. The Restore mode and the restoration controls address each problem with real image processing.
Scratch and dust removal finds outlier pixels — bright specks and dark scratches that differ sharply from their neighbours — and replaces them with the local median. Faded-photo recovery stretches the tonal range with auto-levels and corrects colour casts with grey-world white balance. For black-and-white photos, an optional gentle warm tint adds life. We are honest that this is restoration of the existing image, not AI colourisation, which requires a generative model.
Beyond enlarging, this tool measures and improves perceived quality, and shows you the result. The quality dashboard computes real, explainable metrics from the pixels: a sharpness score from the variance of the Laplacian (the standard focus measure), a detail score from edge density, a cleanliness score from the high-frequency noise estimate, and the resolution in megapixels — for both the original and the enhanced image.
Seeing the before-and-after scores takes the guesswork out of enhancement: you can confirm that sharpness and detail went up and noise went down, and tune the controls to hit the balance you want for the web, print or marketplace.
