Productivity features help you actually write. Focus mode dims everything but the current line, Zen mode strips the interface to nothing but text, Fullscreen dedicates the whole screen to writing, Typewriter mode keeps the active line vertically centered, and Reading mode renders a clean, comfortable view of finished content. Live statistics show word count, character counts with and without spaces, sentence and paragraph counts, estimated reading and speaking time, and page count, all updating as you type.
Import and export are deliberately generous. You can import plain text, Markdown, JSON, CSV, Word DOCX and the text of PDF files. You can export an individual note, a selection of notes, or your entire workspace to TXT, PDF, DOCX, Markdown, HTML or JSON, plus print any note or copy it straight to the clipboard. The JSON workspace backup is a single file you can store anywhere and re-import to move all your notes to another browser or device.
Privacy is not a marketing line here, it is the architecture. The online notepad is a fully client-side application. When you type, the text is held in your browser’s memory and written to your browser’s own storage. It is never transmitted to a server, never logged, and never associated with an account, because there is no account and no server-side database for notes in the first place. You can confirm this yourself by opening your browser’s network tab and watching: typing produces no upload traffic.
Storing data locally has real security benefits. Your notes are protected by the same origin policy and sit inside your own device’s storage, so they cannot be read by other websites. There is no central server to breach, so a data leak somewhere else can never expose your private notes. And because the tool works offline, you can use it in environments where you deliberately have no network access at all.
Rendering is handled safely too. Rich text and Markdown are sanitized before they are displayed, stripping scripts, event handlers and dangerous markup to prevent cross-site scripting, so pasting content from the web cannot execute malicious code. Exported HTML is likewise clean. The one practical implication of local-first storage is that your notes are tied to the browser you wrote them in — so for anything important, use the export and backup features to keep a copy somewhere safe, and remember that clearing your browser data will also clear your notes.
Desktop Notepad is great for opening a single plain-text file, but it stops there. A capable online notepad adds organization, formatting, search, autosave with recovery and exports — while still working offline and keeping your notes private on your device.
