What are meta tags?
Meta tags are snippets of HTML in the <head> of a page that describe its content to browsers, search engines and social platforms. They power your search-result snippet, social-share previews, mobile behaviour and crawler instructions, even though visitors never see them directly.
Why are meta tags important?
Meta tags decide how your page appears in Google and when shared on social media. A strong title and description lift click-through rate, Open Graph tags create rich share cards, robots and canonical tags control crawling and duplication, and structured data unlocks rich results — together driving more traffic from the same content.
What is Open Graph?
Open Graph is a protocol created by Facebook that controls how a URL looks when shared. og:title, og:description and og:image turn a plain link into a rich card with a headline, summary and thumbnail across Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord and more.
What are Twitter Cards?
Twitter Cards (X Cards) are meta tags that turn a link into a rich preview on X, with a title, description, image and attribution. The four types are summary, summary_large_image, app and player; if omitted, X falls back to your Open Graph tags.
What is schema markup?
Schema markup is structured data (usually JSON-LD) that uses the schema.org vocabulary to describe entities on your page — that this is a Product, that is a price, this block is an FAQ. It makes pages eligible for rich results such as star ratings, FAQ accordions and breadcrumbs.
How do meta tags improve SEO?
Meta tags improve SEO by giving search engines clear, machine-readable signals: an optimized title tag (a top ranking factor), a persuasive description (higher CTR), canonical tags (no duplicate-content dilution), robots directives (precise crawl control) and structured data (rich results). Better signals mean better visibility.

Title tag optimization
A great title tag is unique to the page, front-loads the primary keyword, includes your brand, and fits within roughly 600 pixels (about 50–60 characters) so Google does not truncate it. Because engines measure pixels rather than characters, a title full of wide letters can be cut off even at 55 characters, while a narrow one survives past 60.
The SERP preview in this tool measures the actual rendered pixel width of your title and warns you the instant it risks truncation, in both desktop and mobile layouts. Use numbers, brackets and power words to stand out, but never sacrifice clarity or stuff keywords — relevance and a clear benefit win more clicks than repetition.
Meta description optimization
A strong meta description is a 120–160 character pitch that summarizes the page, contains the primary keyword (which Google bolds when it matches the query) and ends with a reason to click. Descriptions that are too short waste valuable snippet real estate; overly long ones get truncated with an ellipsis.
If you leave the description blank, Google composes its own snippet from page text, which is rarely as persuasive as one you write on purpose. Our generator measures description length and pixel width, flags missing keywords and CTAs, and can suggest benefit-driven variants you can use as a starting point.
Twitter / X Cards guide
Twitter Cards (now X Cards) turn a plain link into a rich preview on X with a title, description, image and attribution. They are configured with twitter:* meta tags, and X falls back to your Open Graph tags when Twitter-specific values are missing — so at a minimum you only need twitter:card to opt in to the large-image layout.
There are four card types: summary (a compact card with a small square thumbnail), summary_large_image (a full-width banner image, best for most content), app (promotes a mobile app) and player (embeds video or audio). Add twitter:site and twitter:creator for attribution and analytics. This generator outputs both the Open Graph and Twitter families and reuses your OG values wherever the Twitter equivalents are blank.
Schema markup & JSON-LD
Structured data is a standardized vocabulary defined by schema.org that describes the meaning of your content to machines. JSON-LD is Google’s recommended format — a self-contained block of JSON placed in a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag that does not clutter your visible HTML.
The most useful types for everyday sites include Organization and WebSite site-wide, plus a page-level type such as Article, Product, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, HowTo, Event or Recipe, and BreadcrumbList for navigation. The Schema Studio here supports 19 types and generates valid, pruned JSON-LD you can paste straight into your page.
Match the markup to the visible page, include required properties, use absolute URLs and validate with Google’s Rich Results Test before relying on it.
Technical SEO best practices
A handful of technical meta tags form the foundation everything else rests on. Declare charset (UTF-8) early in the head to prevent garbled text, set the viewport (width=device-width, initial-scale=1) for mobile responsiveness, and add theme-color to brand the browser UI on mobile and in installed PWAs.
Round out the foundation with favicon and apple-touch-icon tags, a web manifest for PWA installability, and the apple-mobile-web-app family for an app-like experience on iOS. The Technical score in this tool audits charset, viewport, language and robots in one place so you can be confident your base is solid before layering on SEO and social refinements.
GEO & AI search optimization
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content and metadata so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity — can understand, trust and accurately cite your page. As more searches end with an AI-generated answer, being the source an AI quotes is becoming as valuable as ranking first.
GEO extends classic SEO with answer-first content, explicit named entities, strong authorship (E-E-A-T) and machine-readable structure. This generator emits an ai:summary meta tag with a quotable one-sentence answer, an entities tag for your key topics, and scores a dedicated GEO and AI-search dimension so you can tune your metadata for the generative era.
