What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp is a single number that represents a moment in time: the count of seconds that have passed since the Unix epoch, midnight UTC on 1 January 1970. Because it is just a number measured in UTC, it is completely free of timezone and formatting ambiguity — the same value means the same instant whether it is read in Tokyo, London or New York. That simplicity is why timestamps are the standard way computers store and exchange time.
What is Epoch time?
Epoch time, Unix time and POSIX time are three names for the same concept: elapsed seconds since the 1970 epoch. The word “epoch” simply means the reference point from which time is counted. Larger systems sometimes count in milliseconds, microseconds or nanoseconds for finer precision, but they all share the same zero point.
How Unix time works
Unix time advances by exactly one each second and ignores leap seconds, so every day contains precisely 86,400 seconds. To turn a timestamp into a calendar date, software divides and offsets the number against the rules of the Gregorian calendar — accounting for leap years — and then applies a timezone offset for display. Going the other way, a date is reduced back to that single UTC second count.
Why developers use timestamps
Storing time as one integer has big advantages: values sort chronologically by simple numeric comparison, date maths becomes addition and subtraction, and there is no confusion about timezones or text formats between systems. UTC vs GMT
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) and GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) both sit at offset +00:00 and are used interchangeably in daily life.
