What are meta tags?
Meta tags are small fragments of HTML that live inside the <head> of a web page. They are invisible to visitors but carry essential information about the page to the systems that consume it: browsers, search-engine crawlers, social networks, messaging apps and — increasingly — AI answer engines. A single page might declare its character encoding, its mobile behaviour, the headline it should show in search results, the image it should show when shared on Facebook, the language versions available for other countries, and machine-readable facts about its content.
The word "meta" means about — meta tags are data about your data. They do not change the visible content of a page directly. Instead, they shape how that page is interpreted and presented elsewhere. Get them right and your link earns a larger, more clickable search result, a rich social-share card and eligibility for special features like FAQ snippets and star ratings. Get them wrong — or omit them — and search engines fall back to guessing, which usually produces a weaker, less compelling listing.

SEO meta tags guide
The title tag and meta description are the two most important meta tags for search engine optimization, because together they form your search result — the headline a user reads and the summary that convinces them to click. The title tag is also one of the strongest on-page ranking signals you fully control.
A great title tag is unique to the page, front-loads the primary keyword, includes your brand, and fits within roughly 600 pixels (about 50–60 characters) so Google does not truncate it. Because engines measure pixels rather than characters, a title full of wide letters can be cut off even at 55 characters, while a narrow one survives past 60. Open Graph tags explained
Open Graph is a protocol introduced by Facebook that lets you control exactly how your URL looks when it is shared on social platforms. Without it, a shared link is just blue text; with it, the link becomes a rich share cardfeaturing a headline, a summary and a large image. Open Graph is read not only by Facebook but by LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Pinterest and almost every modern app that renders link previews — which makes it the single most valuable family of social meta tags to implement.
The core Open Graph properties are:

The og:image is the highest-leverage of these: posts with a large, relevant image attract dramatically more clicks than text-only links. Always serve it from an absolute HTTPS URL, keep important content away from the edges to survive cropping, and add og:image:alt for accessibility. Twitter Cards guide
Twitter Cards (now X Cards) turn a plain link into a rich preview on X, with a title, description, image and attribution. They are configured with twitter:* meta tags, and importantly, X falls back to your Open Graph tags when Twitter-specific values are missing — so at a minimum you only need to add twitter:card to opt in to the large-image layout.
There are four card types:
- summary — a compact card with a small square thumbnail beside the text.
- summary_large_image — a full-width banner image above the title and description; the best choice for most editorial and marketing content.
- app — promotes a mobile application with a direct download link.
- player — embeds a video or audio player directly in the timeline.

Structured data guide
Structured data is a standardized vocabulary — defined by schema.org — that describes the meaning of your content to machines. JSON-LD(JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) is Google's recommended format for structured data. It is a block of JSON placed inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag. Unlike the older Microdata and RDFa formats, which intertwine markup with your visible HTML, JSON-LD lives in one self-contained block — making it far easier to add, read, update and keep in sync with your content.
To get the most from JSON-LD, follow these practices:
- Match the markup to the visible page. Only mark up content that is actually present and visible to users; mismatches can trigger manual penalties.
- Include all required properties. Each rich-result type has required and recommended fields. Missing a required property makes the page ineligible.
- Use absolute URLs for images, logos and links so engines can resolve them unambiguously.
- Validate before you ship. Run your JSON-LD through the Rich Results Test and the schema.org validator to catch errors.
- Keep one logical graph per page. Combine related entities (Organization, WebPage, BreadcrumbList) rather than scattering disconnected snippets.

Technical SEO metadata

International SEO & hreflang
If your site serves more than one language or country, hreflang tags are how you tell search engines which version to show each user. Without them, Google may show your English page to Spanish searchers, or treat your en-US and en-GB pages as duplicate content competing against each other. Hreflang resolves both problems by explicitly mapping each URL to a language and optional region.
The rules that make hreflang work are strict, so it is worth getting them exactly right:
- Reciprocity. Every page in a language set must link to every other version — and to itself. If page A points to page B, page B must point back to page A.
- Valid codes. Use ISO 639-1 language codes (
en,es,fr) optionally combined with ISO 3166-1 region codes (en-US,es-MX). - An x-default. Add an
x-defaultentry pointing to a language-selector or default page for users whose locale you do not explicitly target. - Consistency with canonical. Each localized page should self-canonicalize, not canonicalize to another language.

Twitter Cards (now X Cards) are meta tags that turn a plain link into a rich preview with a title, description, image and attribution when shared on X. A canonical tag (rel="canonical") tells search engines which version of a page is the authoritative one when the same or very similar content is reachable at multiple URLs. It consolidates ranking signals onto a single URL and prevents duplicate-content dilution caused by tracking parameters, pagination, HTTP/HTTPS variants or www/non-www differences.
Use a self-referencing canonical on every indexable page as a baseline. Add a cross-domain or cross-URL canonical whenever content is duplicated or syndicated — for example product pages with sort/filter parameters, printer-friendly versions, or articles republished on partner sites. The canonical should always point to the cleanest, preferred URL.
Hreflang tags tell search engines which language and regional version of a page to show each user. If you publish the same content in multiple languages or target multiple countries (for example en-US, en-GB and fr-FR), hreflang prevents the wrong version from ranking and avoids duplicate-content issues across locales.
Every page in a language set must reference every other version, including itself, and you should add an x-default entry for users whose language you do not target. Facebook caches previews aggressively. After updating your tags, paste the URL into the Facebook Sharing Debugger and click “Scrape Again” to refresh.
