What is HTML to PDF conversion?
HTML to PDF conversion is the process of turning a web page or HTML document — including its CSS styling and, optionally, its JavaScript-rendered content — into a fixed-layout PDF file. A rendering engine lays out the page exactly as a browser would, then exports the painted result as a PDF whose text, fonts, images and layout are locked in place.
There are two honest ways to do this in a browser-based tool. The high-fidelity way is to drive a real headless browser (Chromium) and call its native print-to-PDF, producing vector text and full CSS/JS support — this is what professional services like PDFShift, DocRaptor and PDFCrowd do. The fully private way is to render the HTML on your own device and snapshot it into a PDF. This converter offers both, and picks the best automatically.
Why convert HTML to PDF?
PDF turns a living, browser-dependent web page into a stable, portable document you can rely on. The most common reasons people convert HTML to PDF:
- Shareable format — one self-contained file that opens identically for everyone.
- Print-ready output — consistent margins, page sizes and pagination on any printer.
- Offline access — read and keep the content without a connection or the original site.
- Legal & compliance archiving — freeze invoices, contracts and statements as fixed records.
- Reports & invoices — generate branded, professional PDFs from HTML templates.
- Documentation — bundle web docs into a downloadable manual or knowledge-base export.
Convert HTML to PDF in 3 steps
Add your HTML or URL
Upload an HTML/HTM/XHTML file or a ZIP website bundle, paste raw HTML/CSS/JS, or enter a website URL. The tool instantly analyses the page — title, meta description, CSS/JS/image counts, fonts and an estimated page count.
Choose PDF settings
Pick a rendering engine (Chromium for vector text and full CSS/JS, or the private in-browser engine), a quality mode, page size, orientation and margins. Add headers, footers, page numbers, a watermark, or turn on reader mode to strip ads and navigation.
Convert & download
Press “Convert to PDF”. Watch the live progress dashboard, preview the result, then download the PDF, share it, copy a link, or grab a whole batch as a ZIP.
HTML vs PDF: which should you use?
HTML and PDF solve different problems. HTML is ideal while content is live and interactive; PDF is ideal once it needs to be shared, printed or archived. The table below summarises the trade-offs that matter when you decide to convert.
| Feature | HTML | |
|---|---|---|
| Editing | Easily editable source code; reflows to any screen. | Fixed layout; edit the source HTML and re-convert. |
| Printing | Depends on the browser’s print engine and stylesheet. | Print-ready and consistent on every printer. |
| Sharing | Needs hosting or all assets bundled to look right. | Single self-contained file that opens everywhere. |
| Appearance | Can vary by browser, screen size and over time. | Looks identical on every device, forever. |
| Security | Can run scripts; hard to lock down. | Can be password-protected and permission-restricted (via API). |
| Portability | Many linked files (CSS/JS/images) unless inlined. | One portable document with fonts and images embedded. |
| Archiving | Links rot; rendering changes with browsers. | Stable long-term format; PDF/A for formal archiving. |
Supported input types
Convert from any of these sources — upload, paste, or point at a live URL.

Chromium (server): the page is rendered by real headless Chrome and exported with its native page.pdf(). You get vector, selectable text, full CSS and JavaScript support, true URL rendering with web fonts, and proper headers/footers and page ranges. This is the highest-fidelity option and the default when available.
In-browser (private): the HTML is rendered in an offscreen frame on your device, snapshotted with html2canvas and assembled into a PDF with pdf-lib. Nothing is uploaded and it works offline. The output is a raster page (text is part of the image) and page scripts are not executed, for safety. Choose this when privacy matters most.
Auto: tries Chromium first for quality and falls back to the in-browser engine automatically if the server engine is unavailable — so a conversion always succeeds.
Privacy, security & data handling
Your content is treated as sensitive. The in-browser engine never transmits your HTML — it is rendered and converted entirely on your device. The Chromium engine processes your HTML or URL in an isolated, sandboxed headless browser, then deletes the input and output immediately; nothing is stored or logged.
URL conversions are protected against SSRF: only public http/https addresses are allowed, private/loopback/link-local/CGNAT and cloud-metadata ranges are blocked at the DNS level, sub-requests to internal hosts are aborted, and every request is rate-limited with hard timeouts. Files are deleted automatically after processing, supporting GDPR-friendly workflows.
